Response to Climate Change
Inner West Council is responding to the climate crisis by working to become carbon neutral y 2025. So far we have reduced Council's carbon emissions by over 70% since 2016/17.
Council climate and renewable energy action to date include:
- Becoming the first council in Australia to divest from fossil fuels in 2019
- Purchasing 100% electricity renewable electricity from NSW solar farms since July 2022
- Tripling rooftop solar PV capacity on Council owned buildings to 965kW since 2016/17
- Reducing electricity from streetlighting by 39% since 2017/18
- Completing a climate risk assessment for the LGA and Council services in 2024
We are committed to further action, with the following adopted targets:
- Carbon Neutral by December 2025
- Fully electric vehicle fleet by 2030/31
- Gas free operations by 2030/31
Council is also working to support the whole Inner West move towards zero emissions. The five key areas of focus are renewables, mobility, buildings and precincts, community partnerships and zero waste.
