What is Refugee Week?

Refugee Week aims to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees but also celebrate the positive contributions that refugees make to Australian society.

In 2020 we will celebrate Refugee Week with a number of online events.

There's a virtual art exhibition with stories from the artists, a series of international recipes, stories from our refugee community and more.

Celebrate Refugee Week with us to acknowledge the amazing contribution that refugees have made and continue to make to our community


Refugee Week is an annual event in the month of June that brings to the fore the rights of refugees and people seeking asylum. The theme for Refugee Week in 2020 is the Year of Welcome.

If we are to speak of ‘welcome’, we must acknowledge that in Australia, the welcome mat sits on the stolen lands of First Nations Peoples and that sovereignty was never ceded.

In a week where the focus must remain on systemic state-based violence against First Nations Peoples and communities, and the 437+ Black deaths in custody in Australia since 1991, what does the Year of Welcome mean?

We must take responsibility as immigrant and refugee settlers to fight and dismantle the systems that violate First Nations Peoples’ fundamental right to be safe in their own country.

Problematising the 2020 theme of ‘welcome’ does not mean we do not act with care and love in support of those who have fled oppression and violence in real time. Rather, it means we are conscious that we are on stolen land, and awake to the material reality of violence and oppression that operates here.
