Artist statement

Ashfield Public School students with Artist in Residence Karen Manning Intersections showcases the collective contributions of every student from Kindergarten to Year 6 at Ashfield Public School to acknowledge Refugee Week and the importance of "' compassion, empathy and human connection. This oversized patchwork quilt is inspired by the beloved children's book 'My Two Blankets' by Irena Kobold and Freya Blackwood and is composed of 504 unique fabric tiles, incorporating applique, embroidery, and beading techniques. The work celebrates unity, diversity and community with this fusion of woven imagery and text honouring the experiences of migrants and displaced people, highlighting their journeys and resilience where a visual intersection of memories, culture and stories come together.
