Creating habitat
Creating habitat gardens in schools are important for the survival of our native wildlife, from the smallest of soil living organisms to insects, birds, reptiles, mammals and frogs. It also provides a great opportunity for students to learn about biodiversity on school grounds.
Council supports schools in restoring and creating native habitat gardens with the offers below.
Native plants
Council’s native plant nurseries produce local provenance native plants primarily for use at Council’s natural areas (in parks and reserves across the LGA).
Council supports local schools to participate in National Schools Tree Day, Australia's biggest tree planting and nature-care event.
Council can provide up to 50 free native plants each year to Inner West schools. These plants include grasses, shrubs, vines and other groundcovers which are ideal as a standalone planting or for planting under large trees to help mulch and protect them and create habitat for other native species. The species provided are based on what our Community Nurseries at Marrickville and Rozelle Bay have in stock at that time.
A limited selection of stock is also available for sale to schools at a cost of $3.10 per plant (tubestock).

- Only one request per school from a school staff member (not a parent or P&C)
