Cycle Safety

Bike riders can ride on any road unless prohibited by signposting. Here are some tips for staying safe:

• Wear a helmet correctly
• Fit your bike with a bell or warning device and reflectors (white for the front and red at rear)
• Use lights for night time riding
• Wear reflective clothing so you can be easily seen by motorists and pedestrians.

Share the Path

Bicycle riders must give way on footpaths. Be particularly careful around young children, older people and animals. Please slow down and be safe and careful when cycling around pedestrians and dogs. Riding slowly will allow you to stop quickly when a child or dog acts spontaneously as they often do. If you would like to pass a pedestrian or group of people, please use your bell or ask politely however, it may be necessary to stop and give way as is required.

Special rules for bicycle riders

• You may perform hook turns at intersections unless prohibited by sign posting. You do not need to signal when making a hook turn.
• You do not need to give a left or stop signal.
• You may ride 2 abreast but not more than 1.5 metres apart.
• You may overtake two other bicycle riders who are riding side-by-side.
• You may travel in a Bus Lane, Tram Lane, Transit Lane or Truck Lane but not in a Bus Only Lane.
• You may ride to the left of a continuous white edge line.
• You may overtake on the left of stopped and slow moving vehicles.
