Marrickville Library and Community Spaces
Council partnered with Mirvac to develop the former Marrickville Hospital site, bordering Marrickville Road, Livingstone Road and Lilydale Street. The development produced a new larger library and much needed new community and cultural facilities, open space and residential apartments.

March 2018
The DA was approved by the Central Sydney Planning Panel on 17 August 2017. Modifications to the DA were approved on 8 March 2018.
Mirvac has commenced construction of the Library Building following completion of excavation and retention at the end of December 2017.
Current work on site is focused on basement and ground floor slab. The interior of the old hospital building is being cleaned and lead paint is being removed.
The old hospital slate roof is currently being replaced with new slate.
August 2017
The development application lodged by Mirvac, for the construction of the new Marrickville Library and community spaces, as well as residential accommodation, will be considered by the Sydney Central Planning Panel next week.
The Sydney Central Planning Panel will meet on Thursday 17 August at 10:00am to determine the application. Council will email the decision to this database, as well as publish the result on the Inner West Council website.

May 2017
In May 2017 Mirvac lodged amended plans with Council. The amendments include:
- changes to the operable windows of various units to improve cross ventilation
- provision of an additional communal terrace on level 9
- minor balcony change for Unit 3082
- revised landscape plans including provision of 3 additional trees
- additional information to clarify documentation and plan details.

What is the new Marrickville Library and Community Spaces?
It will be a hub of community interactivity where people engage with technology, information, ideas, and each other; a space that includes a larger library, and much needed community and cultural facilities. A place for personal or group study, meetings, and to explore common issues together – where current technology helps people explore the world of learning, culture, information, and history. A multicultural community space that is a focal point in Marrickville, a space for people to gather that acknowledges our Aboriginal history and also represents the diversity of our community. It will be a place where the community can come together for events, in the open space or in one of the venues available to hire.
The vision for the new Marrickville Library is of a building that is eye-catching, iconic, and yet welcoming. Seamlessly integrating contemporary design and heritage elements, the new Library will contain collection space, meeting rooms, youth space, a technology area, a children's zone with its own outdoor play space and a café.
The main hospital building and the old nurse's quarters will be fully conserved and reused as part of the redevelopment, while the old hospital lane will be retained as a central access way through the site.
The new Library will reinvigorate the old Marrickville Hospital site – a neglected location – into a place of civic pride.
What's in the residential development?
Three buildings on the northern side of the site will house 250 apartments, including nine set aside for affordable housing. Mirvac Design is collaborating with respected architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer to design the residential section.
Entry and exit of vehicles is from Livingstone Road.
What happens next?
Mirvac has submitted a Development Application (DA) including the community venues and open space, and detailed designs for the residential part of the site. View the DA here.
The DA will be assessed by independent planners and determined by the Central Sydney Planning Panel.
Mirvac will commence works on the site including demolition from early 2017 that were approved in previous development applications.
Construction is intended to commence mid-2017 subject to approvals.
The target completion date for the Patyegarang Place works (i.e. Marrickville Library and community spaces) is early 2019.
