Have your say on Leichhardt Skate Park
Thursday, 31 March 2022
Inner West residents are invited to comment on plans for the long awaited Leichhardt Skate Park, which is now on public exhibition.
The approval for the Skate Park in Leichhardt Park was rescinded by a majority of Councillors in December 2020, despite having been approved only weeks before.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said the newly elected Councillors are committed to delivering new facilities for children and young people.
“This skate park has been promised to local young people for far too long and I can’t wait for us to finally make it happen,” said Byrne.
“The advocacy of local young people for a skate park in Lilyfield and Leichhardt dates back to 2011 with multiple locations in Callan Park having been blocked.
Council has proposed constructing the skate park as part of the Leichhardt Park Plan of Management.
The skate plaza includes skate facilities, ancillary seating, shade structures and landscaping and upgrades to existing parking spaces.
It will also include a new recreation facility that will provide a space for active recreation for all ages and abilities, is accessible for persons with a disability, allows a high level of passive surveillance and improves the amenity of the area.
“The new location won’t take any of the sporting ground space but will be in a public and accessible place for young people throughout the Inner West and because it’s outside Callan Park it won’t require consent from the NSW Government,” said Mayor Byrne.
“After such long, unnecessary delays and having seen the incredible popularity of the Sydenham Skate Park, I am so excited that we are at last delivering something of similar quality on the other side of Parramatta Road.”
