New art at Newtown ArtSeat by Kieran Butler
Thursday 4 February 2020
Kieran Butler is the latest artist to feature at the Newtown ArtSeat.
Their work, This is but a horizon we are working towards is a “visual and aural beacon where audiences can meet to feel hope, take care, and be with their community.”
The artwork design is based on the Progress Pride flag and the slogan “This is but a horizon we are working towards”. Letters of hope and care from LGBTQIA+ community members can be read by passersby. Audio readings of the letters are accessible via a scannable QR code and hosted on the artist’s website https://k-h-b.com.au/
Kieran says the artwork “is a reminder that as a community and individuals, LGTQIA + people still have a long road ahead to a future where we are able to freely live our truths.
“This road moves toward a horizon that is unknown and constantly changing and this constant change is OK.
“This does not mean the road is easy, but that we’ll make it together.
“This is also a reminder to our allies that they need to put in more effort - more effort with so many things, even the small things,” Kieran said.
Council’s ArtSeat is a permanent structure in Newtown Square that provides local, emerging and established artists with a space where experimental and non-commercial art can be showcased.
Incorporating public seating and lighting, the ArtSeat is also a landmark meeting point.
