Council adopts infrastructure Budget
Thursday 13 August 2020
Inner West Council has adopted a Budget focused on stimulating the local economy, delivering new infrastructure and fixing ageing infrastructure.
For the first time, Council has set aside funds allocated to focus on renewing Council assets at the appropriate time in their life-cycle.
With the significant impact of COVID-19 crisis on the local economy, Council is actively working with local residents and businesses to help generate the recovery.
To this end, Council resolved to pool its developer contributions reserves and fast track $20 million for the delivery of projects such as road, footpath and stormwater works.
Other accelerated projects include installing new shade sails at Council’s aquatic centres, traffic calming works, new bike paths, increased tree planting, solar installations and water sensitive design works.
Council’s 2020-21 Budget includes the following funding commitments:
• $12.2 million to renew footpaths, including $4.2 million targeting the most degraded footpaths in the Inner West within the next 12 months
• $5 million for new tree plantings - an eight-fold increase in funding for tree planting, and the biggest investment in green infrastructure in the history of the Inner West
• $4 million for works at Leichhardt, Annette Kellerman and Fanny Durack Aquatic Centres (in addition to the new Ashfield Aquatic Centre and restored Dawn Fraser Baths)
• $23.7 million to deliver new shared pathways and cycleways across the Inner West
• $1.1 million new skate park in Leichhardt Park
• $30.1 million to replace and upgrade local roads
• $1.3 million to retrofit Council buildings with solar power generation and energy efficient lighting
• $11.6 million to deliver the Parramatta Road Urban Improvement Program
• $10.7 million to upgrade Council’s Town Centres
• $3.7 million to upgrade Haberfield Library
• $2.3million to upgrade Marrickville Town Hall
• $1 million to upgrade St Peters Town Hall
