2018 Inner West Council Grants program opens soon
Tuesday, 5 June 2018
Inner West Council’s 2018 grants program opens Thursday, 7 June. Inner west individuals and community groups are urged to apply for up to $50,000 in grant funding.&
The NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Grants are worth a minimum of $10,000 to a maximum of $50,000.
Council grants provide financial and in-kind assistance of up to $7,500, and include Community Wellbeing Grants, Arts and Culture Grants, Community History and Heritage Grants, Environment Grants, and Recreation Grants.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said the grants enable the community to develop projects and programs that address local needs. “I’ve seen for myself the amazing work that has been achieved by last year’s grant winners. I can’t wait to see what ideas emerge this year that will further strengthen our Inner West.
“I really encourage everyone with innovative ideas and new initiatives to apply for a Council grant,” Mayor Byrne said.
Marrickville Legal Centre (MLC) received a $15,796 Stronger Communities Grant for an exhibition of photographs, Champions of Justice. The exhibition told the stories of diverse Inner West citizens who, with the help of MLC, had successfully fought for equity and fairness.
Marrickville Legal Centre Managing Principal Solicitor Annette van Gent said it was “amazing” to have the support of the grant. “We had two very successful events, achieved a lot of media coverage, and a lot of interest from the general public.
“Altogether, we raised the profile of our work, and awareness around the many legal issues we assist in resolving, whether that’s housing rights, employment entitlements and domestic and family violence.
“We are very grateful for the grant and the support of Inner West Council.”
The Resourceful Australian Indian Network Inc (RAIN) received $7,200. RAIN’s Sudha Natarajan explains that the year-long project combines capacity building for seniors with supporting refugees and new migrants by providing skills training.
“The grant has allowed us to hold two Super Chef competitions, where seniors share their cooking skills, as well as information sessions and exercise classes.
“There’s been a lot of friendship and a lot of socialising as a result of this grant,” Sudha said.
