Next Inner West Council meeting
Inner West Council’s next Council meeting will be held on Tuesday 5 July at the Ashfield Chambers.
The Administrator of Inner West Council Mr Richard Pearson said initially it had been proposed to hold a Council meeting in Leichhardt in June.
However a Council meeting schedule was not adopted when the first Council meeting – in May at Petersham – was abandoned due to protestors.
Since then, Council staff have been working on the best way to move forward and establish a regular calendar of meetings, while at the same time ensuring the paramount concerns of safety and non-confrontation are addressed.
A risk assessment of all Council’s venues has shown that the Ashfield Chambers is best from a safety perspective.
Advice has also been sought from the local Police in relation to security and police presence.
“The local police have told us in no uncertain terms that they do not want a repeat of the May Council meeting,” Mr Pearson said.
“So while it is not ideal that a meeting won’t be held in June, and it was not my preference, we have agreed that holding the next meeting in Ashfield in early July is the best way forward.
“The safety of the public and our staff is our number one concern. We also want the meetings to run as efficiently and effectively for the public as possible,” Mr Pearson said.
The announcement of the next Council meeting date comes after the first successful meeting of the Implementation Action Group (IAG) which is made up of former Mayors and Deputy Mayors of Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville Councils.
The IAG is advising the Administrator on getting the new Council up and running, including input to development of policies and strategies.
As well, three successful Local Representation Advisory Committee (LRAC) meetings have also now been held, in Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville.
The LRACs are advising the Administrator on key agenda items to be considered at Council meetings.
The LRACs are based around the former local government areas of Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville, and are made up of former elected representatives – including Labor, Liberal, the Greens and Independents.
All 12 of the former Ashfield Councillors, including Mayor Lucille McKenna OAM, are on the Ashfield LRAC.
Nine former Leichhardt Councillors are on the Leichhardt LRAC, including former Mayor Darcy Byrne.
Seven former Marrickville Councillors are on the Marrickville LRAC, including former Mayor Sam Iskandar.
The 5 July Inner West Council meeting will include report backs from the advisory committee Chairs, as well as other important local matters.
