Artist statement
The central motif of the matjam (flying-fox) is a recurring motif in the work of muruwari artist Virginia Keft. Here long before humans arrived, these vulnerable creatures are important to our ecosystems, pollinating and dispersing the seeds of many Native Australian plants. In this work, the woven matjam are made through ancient weaving techniques passed from Elders to the artist. Just like people, they thrive by maintaining familial bonds and deep connections to the land and sky. Their connections span generations - there is much to learn from their synergistic relationship to kin, Culture and Country.
