Main Streets Street Art - Ashfield & Leichhardt

Artist applications for this program closed on Sunday 7 July. Stay tuned for artist announcements and updates.

Council has two exciting artist opportunities to create site-specific street artworks for Leichhardt and Ashfield.

These opportunities are targeted towards artists of either Chinese or Italian cultural heritage, reflecting the significant contributions and histories of these cultural communities in the Inner West. Artists with First Nations cultural heritage are encouraged to apply as the Ashfield project will see a collaboration with a First Nations artist. This acknowledges and marks the continued significance of First Nations culture in our community.

Interested artists are encouraged to review the following information and complete the relevant expression of interest form via SmartyGrants.

These opportunities will first be run as expression of interest rounds, ahead of shortlisting artists. Following shortlisting, those artists will be provided with further information and specifications for the sites, with an opportunity to submit a design proposal for community consultation.

Ashfield Town Hall Square

As part of the redevelopment of Ashfield Town Hall Square and Main Streets Strategy, Council will be implementing a street artwork within the space.

This artwork will acknowledge and celebrate the significant and ongoing contributions and histories of the Chinese community in Ashfield. The street artwork is to be primarily completed by an artist of Chinese cultural heritage in collaboration with a First Nations artist, but the work should also reflect the many diverse cultures, ethnicities and histories of Ashfield, most notably the Gadigal and Wangal people of the Sydney basin. Artists must be willing to work and consult with local community in the artwork development, which will be facilitated by Council staff. The budget available for this project is up to $50,000. This fee is inclusive of artist design fee, time and materials to deliver the project. Council will further cover the cost of lift hire and the application of an anti-graffiti coating.

Little Italy, Leichhardt

A new street artwork will be created for the Norton Street precinct of Leichhardt as part of the Main Streets Strategy.

This street artwork is ideally completed by an artist of Italian cultural heritage, reflecting the spirit of Leichhardt as "Little Italy" and the significant Italian cultural history of this area. Artists must be willing to work and consult with local community in the artwork development, which will be facilitated by Council staff. The budget available for this project is $15,000-$20,000 This fee is inclusive of artist design fee, time and materials to deliver the project. Council will further cover the cost of lift hire and the application of an anti-graffiti coating.
