Mimi Kind

Mimi has just shown Push/Pull, kinetic sound sculpture and installation at Chrissie Cotter Gallery, within Kind's works, she makes and repurposes machines with the intention of removing them from such responsibilities, creating pieces in which the machine is doing no work ‘for us’, but is just being a machine, as and for ‘itself’.

Mimi's practice entails kinetic sound sculpture and installation, using a variety of electrical, mechanical and magnetic means. She has presented in various galleries including Airspace Projects, Sydney Non-Objective Art Projects (SNO), 107 Projects Redfern, Testing Grounds, and is a Substation 2021 Artist in Development.

Current work and inspiration

"My work integrates unexpected technologies and materials to create a vitality reminiscent of forms moving in nature. Often eliciting an emotional curiosity to inorganic matter and energetic operators such as electricity, I hope to inspire reflection upon our relationship with the substances and energies making up our world" (Mimi Kind 2021).

Mimi has been making electromagnet sculptures and kinetic works using small fans, inspired by natural and scientific phenomena, and playful interactions within/between materials and systems. Her works, as energised machines, aim to draw curiosity from the public as they perceive animation and potentially a sort of ‘aliveness’.

Mimi will be presenting a free kinetic art workshop for 12-14 year olds. Contact her for further details! mimi.l.kind@gmail.com
