Local Creative Sexy Galexy at Chrissie Cotter Gallery for Pride Inner West
Having performed all over the world throughout their 30 year career as a Drag King performing and producing King shows, Sexy Galexy is a glitz, glam, masc, fem, a get down boogie man all wrapped up in a disco-loving, muscle flexing more-of-a-woman-when-i’m-a-man man. A true gem and pioneer, the original Drag King ‘Glamour BOI’ was the influencer of the modern Drag King look. Sexy always brings his legendary stage presence, high glamour, high camp performance magic. Be prepared to be bedazzled!
Current work
Sexy Galexy's work will be featured in Behind the Zip which is on display at the Chrissie Cotter Gallery from February 16 until March 5. This exhibition will show that Drag Kings in Australia have had an extensive and vibrant history. "We have been overlooked as a community of Kings, woman and lesbians. I want to showcase the talent and the amazing stories from our scenes around Australia. Also to instigate the Kings to put their archival material into the Queer archives so our community has a voice and history."
Behind the Zip features a lot of incredible archival material tracing the history of Drag Kings across Australia. Can you share a little about your favourite pieces being featured?
I can’t pick a favourite piece because I love the collection as a whole! It’s amazing showing what everybody was doing back then, there was so much going on! The Drag King scene was huge, so it’s wonderful to see how much and how varied it was. There will be almost 200 images on display as well as video footage.
As a Drag King whose career kicked off in the late 90s, you’ve performed across Australia and in drag web series Socially Distant hosted by international King of Dragula fame, Landon Cider. Can you share a little about one of your most memorable gigs?
One most memorable moment was working for Queer TV with Pandora Box, broadcasting the Mardi Gras parade live for Channel 31. We had the opportunity of standing in Taylor Square, which was amazing, because being out on the street like that is something we won’t experience again. I did this for 3 years, 2004-2006.
What are your hopes for the future of Drag Kings across the nation and internationally? Are there any platforms you would like them to be featured on / future projects you’d like to deliver?
My hopes are for Drag Kings to be known and recognized as much as Drag Queens; that we receive the acknowledgement as well and the job opportunities. When people think about booking a drag performer at an event or a party, I would love for them to also consider drag kings. I want the art form to be celebrated equally.
