Alexandra Plim

Artists biography

Alexandra has lived in the Inner West of Sydney her whole life, bar a brief stint at Uni in Wagga Wagga. She is a professionally trained actor, turned abstract painter, working from her home studio in Lewisham. Taking time off performing on stage to raise her kids, left her overwhelmed with an urgent need to create. Painting allows her to further explore her emotions and experiences in life, and express them with colour, texture and movement.

Alexandra is an expressive abstract artist, based in the inner western suburbs of Sydney. She paints intuitively with acrylics, often incorporating a variety of mixed media. Her work is energetic and playful, using colour, texture and bold marks to add drama and movement.

"In addition to being an artist and mum to two young children, my first love is performance. I am a professionally trained actor, having completed an Advanced Diploma in Acting for Screen and Stage. I have performed on stage, in Australia and Edinburgh, appearing in theatre, at fringe festivals and the odd TV commercial.

My performance training and experience continues to influence and energise my artistic practise. On the best painting days I am a city girl dreaming of far away places: majestic gorges, arid expanses of land and foliage you can get lost in.

Colour drives me. Every canvas is a new place to experiment with different colours and mixes. Along the way, forms and marks pose questions and I respond.

I am truly addicted to the irreverent process of creating a painting. Much like rehearsing a play or improvising on stage, painting requires me to be in the moment. And it's a wonderful feeling".

Current work and inspiration

My current works are colourful and expressive abstract paintings, predominantly on canvas and paper. I am inspired by the Australian landscape.

Sometimes a painting reminds me of a particular place I have been, often in childhood, a moment, a feeling, and conversation. My work is intuitive, so I make it up as I go along, each mark or stroke or colour informs the next. What happens when I mix these two? Is that one dry and this one wet, What happens when I scratch into the paint? With a paint brush with a scraper? What happens when I squish these two canvases together? How does that look? How does it feel? Does it make sense to me? What ever meaning a viewer takes from my art it completely between them and the artwork.

Alexandra recently took part in the Inner West Creative Trails, opening her studio up to the public and inviting conversations about her work.
