Pride Square

Pride Square

Inner West Council is one of the most diverse local government areas in NSW.

To celebrate this fact, in 2022 Council successfully applied to the Geographic Names Board to rename the area around Newtown Town Hall as Pride Square.

Pride Square now also houses the Inner West Pride Centre, which opened in 2024 following significant remedial works by Council to the former Town Hall site.

The centrepiece of Pride Square is the Pride beacon, a tribute to our diverse inner west LGBTQ+ community, which has become an important cultural landmark and tourist attraction.

Pride Square and the Pride beacon were formally launched by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in February 2023.

Other Council revitalisation works to area include illuminated timber seating scattered throughout the space, and vibrant rainbow poles and tree lighting placed throughout Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, where our annual Mardi Gras Parade screening is held.

Pride Square is located at 1A Bedford St, Newtown in the area bounded by Enmore Road, King St, Australia St and Bedford St. Find it on Google maps.

Pride Inner West

Inner West Council proudly celebrated the 2023 Sydney WorldPride season with an exciting three-week program of free and low-cost events launched in Pride Square.

Our Pride Inner West festival was developed in partnership with local LGBTQ+ community organisations and featured over 60 performances, programs, activities and workshops attended by more than 20,000 people.

Inner West Council also successfully applied for extended trading hours to support local businesses during this period.
