Description
Henson Park is a multi-purpose sporting ground with a storied history.
It was the site of a brick pit until 1918, and its closure left an immense water hole which became a public danger. Marrickville Council purchased the site and undertook the task of draining and filling the immense hole, providing relief work for hundreds of people during the Great Depression.
The ground was officially opened in 1933. Soon afterwards it hosted the cycling events and the closing ceremony of the 1938 British Empire Games, the forerunner to today's Commonwealth Games.
Henson Park is the home ground of Newtown Rugby League Football Club (the Jets), who compete in the NSW Cup competition and draw large crowds for home games. It also hosts AFL matches, including the annual Community Cup charity match.
