LGBTQ+ site study

Many of Australia’s most prominent and ground-breaking LGBTQ+ activists, collectives, and organisations were based in Sydney. This virtual site study, focuses on the LGBTQ+ history of the Inner West from the 1970s until today, and has been designed to align with Stage 5 of the NSW History Syllabus. Many of Australia’s most prominent and ground-breaking LGBTQ+ activists, collectives, and organisations were based -or are still based- in this area.

This site study aims to foster students’ interest in local history and to prompt them to reflect on some major social changes that have occurred locally and in Australia more broadly over the past fifty years, as well as developing students’ historical skills and their understanding of historical concepts.

The resources included in this kit provides teachers with everything they need to conduct a mandated site study for Stage 5. A broad range of historical sources have been included: photos, and videos, to websites, text-based sources, and recorded oral histories.

The student activities have been designed to guide students through the process of historical inquiry, as outlined in the NSW History Syllabus.

There are two guides for teachers -a text-based guide and a video, detailed Syllabus links, a PowerPoint introduction to use with students, and an extended bibliography of relevant items from Inner West Libraries’ collection.
