Addison Road Community Centre – Biofiltration Ponds
Project description:
Inner West Council is constructing a Bioretention Pond System at the Addison Road Community Centre. The works will:
- Improve stormwater quality
- Reinterpret a historic creek line
- Improve amenity to the area
Project address: Addison Road Community Centre, 142 Addison Rd, Marrickville
Progress:
The detailed design of the bioretention system has been completed and involves:
- Diverting stormwater from an upstream residential catchment, approximately 9 ha in
- Low flows being directed into the bioretention system located to the north of the existing Gumbramorra community hall;
- Stormwater being pre-treated in a gross pollutant trap (GPT), which removes litter, organic debris and some coarse sediment. This GPT is located in the existing internal road in ARCC;
- Stormwater being treated in the bioretention system, which removes suspended solids, nutrients, heavy metals, hydrocarbons, pathogens and other pollutants; and
- Treated stormwater being discharged back to the stormwater system
Project Completion details:
- Over 3,500 native tube stocks were planted in the pond system
- 200 planting volunteers helped install plants on Friday 12 August 2022 and Saturday 13 August 2022.
- Volunteers will be key to the finishing of the project, and the ongoing maintenance and function of the ponds, especially after future storm events.
Budget: $500,000
