Newtown Town Hall reopens as Inner West Pride Centre
Wednesday 7 August 2024
The new Inner West LGBTQI+ Pride Centre at Newtown Town Hall will officially open on Saturday 10 August.
This will be the first Pride Centre in NSW and follows a $2.6 million renovation to upgrade and modernise the facilities and spaces in the historic Newtown Town Hall.
Following the official renaming of Pride Square during World Pride 2023, Inner West Council resolved to transform Newtown Town Hall to the Inner West Pride Centre.
The Inner West has always been the beating heart and soul of the LGBTQI+ community and the long struggle for civil rights in Sydney, New South Wales, and Australia.
With the opening of the Pride Centre, the Inner West is building on that heritage by providing a space that the LGBTQI+ community can have ownership of and can use for community activities, events and to access services.
Highly respected service provider for LGBTQI+ young people, their families and communities, Twenty10 is moving into the converted Town Hall and will be operating the Pride Centre in partnership with Inner West Council.
Twenty10 is Australia's largest, and longest running organisation supporting young LGBTQIA+ people in NSW. They offer a broad range of health and mental health services and supports including housing, counselling, social support groups and events both online and in-person.
They also have phone and web support line QLife and provide training in working with young LGBTQIA+ people. All of these services and more will be located at the Inner West Pride Centre.
As well as keynote speakers including Twenty10 co-chair, Mon Schafter and journalist and filmmaker, Patrick Abboud, the opening will also feature performances from the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir, DJ Feverbreak, Mya Soul and AJ Stanton.
