Mother of Invention at Chrissie Cotter Gallery
Monday 2 May 2022
Petersham assemblage artist Gillian Wright will exhibit her sculptures at Inner West Council’s Chrissie Cotter Gallery.
Her eclectic pieces are created with materials that no longer serve their original purpose, combining her passion for collectables with ‘the humble venetian blind’.
These assemblages, some with an element of ‘wings’, create pieces with a whimsical quality.
“Necessity is the mother of invention,” said Gillian.
“I've always been fascinated by our ability to create something from 'nothing', repurposing materials into something more: A chest of drawers with biscuit tins, paper doily cut from a newspaper or a pair of shoes from tyres,
“One person’s trash is just waiting for the perfect moment for it to become part of a new whole.” she said.
Gillian was drawn to exhibit at Chrissie Cotter Gallery because it has a long history of integrity and representing multi-disciplinary artists from a broad range of backgrounds.
“Artists that don't conform to a strict mould and have a more experimental approach.” she said.
