Refurbished Haberfield Centre and Library now open

Tuesday 18 May 2021

Council has opened the $4.3 million upgrade and expansion of Haberfield Centre and Library.

The upgrade includes improved accessibility and light filled flexible spaces that are connected to Dalhousie Street and the refurbished internal garden.

“Haberfield Centre and Library has been completely reimagined to better serve our modern and diverse community,” said Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne.

“Our modern refurbishment of Haberfield Centre and Library will make this civic institution more usable and accessible for our whole community,” Mayor Byrne said.

Lahznimmo Architects (in consultation with conservation specialists) have restored the original School of the Arts building and added a new street facing hall forming a landscaped courtyard that can be shared between the Library and modern community venue. The courtyard is secure from the street, providing a safe outdoor place for children.

As well as making the facility fully accessible, other improvements include:

• Two flexible community spaces for 40 and 60 seated visitors (one brand new) open to the public for a nominal booking fee. Each room has A/V technology and a kitchenette making them suitable for a range of uses

• Two new meeting rooms for up to eight people

• Increased laptop and bench space for working and studying, including a covered veranda

• Internet access available throughout the building, veranda and garden

• Improved energy and water saving measures: new roof top solar panels, energy efficient air-conditioning and lighting systems, and rainwater re-use and water saving fixtures

• Refreshed collection to meet the needs and interests of Haberfield’s unique demographic

• A site-specific public artwork commissioned by Inner West Council

A month of free programs and events will be held to celebrate the opening.
