King George Park and Constellation Playground to get $2.8 million upgrade
Monday 30 August 2021
Inner West Council has approved plans for a $1.6 million priority upgrade of the King George Park car park, $800,000 in sporting facility improvements at King Park and a $480,000 upgrade to Constellation Playground.
In 2020, Inner West Council was awarded $2.875 million in compensation as a result of the loss of open space at King George Park in Rozelle, which was acquired by Transport for NSW for its WestConnex project.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said Council and the local community have fought hard to win this compensation and that it was fitting for the funding to go straight back into the neighbourhood.
“The impacts from WestConnex on residents around King George Park have been horrendous, so improving their quality of life is a priority.
“I am thankful therefore that the King George Park and Constellation Playground projects will now deliver a range of positive improvements to the area,” he said.
After extensive community consultation, Council has given the “green light” to start the immediate planning and delivery of the King George Park Car Park Safety Improvement project and the refurbishment and upgrade of Constellation Playground. The projects will be delivered in mid-2022.
Council is also dedicating $800,000 of the compensation funds to sporting facility improvements at King George Park. This is to be combined with the funds already dedicated to the refurbishment of the ground, which is scheduled for 2022.
Council is also calling on the NSW Government to conduct an assessment of and deliver funding for the resheeting and renewal of the all the footpaths and roads that have been damaged in the precinct around King George Park as a result of by heavy vehicle movements due to WestConnex construction.
