Council to consult on Resident Precinct Committees
Friday 26 November 2021
Inner West Council will investigate whether there is interest in the community in establishing Resident Precinct Committees (RPCs).
Precinct Committees are resident-run groups open for all residents in the area to attend to discuss local issues.
“I am a firm believer in grass-roots democracy and this is what Resident Precinct Committees are all about,” said Inner West Mayor Rochelle Porteous.
“During my entire four-year term I have been fighting to have RPCs established in Inner West Council because they are a valuable tool in meeting with and listening to local residents on matters that are important to them.”
RPC meetings are convened by residents and supported by Council. Any resident in a precinct area can attend a meeting, take part in discussions, and vote on resolutions.
“I really value the significant contribution that RPCs can make to community conversations and debates,” Mayor Porteous said.
“They can be instrumental in raising many issues which can result in significant improvements to the quality of life of all residents in the Inner West.
“For example, RPCs are an effective way of involving the community in decision-making about changes, developments or plans for improvements for the area.
“I’m really pleased that at last night’s Council Meeting, we voted to investigate whether our community feels the same way about the value of RPCs,” Mayor Porteous said.
Council will consult with the community in early 2022 and come back to the new Council with recommendations on whether or not to establish RPCs and how they should be run.
