What bird is that?

Council is encouraging residents to get involved in Bird Life Australia's 'Birds in Backyards' quarterly seasonal survey.

With most people staying at home, it's a perfect time to watch, count and learn more about local bird life.

Birds in Backyards is a research, education and conservation program developed in response to the loss of small native birds from our parks and gardens, the rapid expansion of our urban landscape and the consequent loss of habitat for native birds.

Surveys don't have to be done in a backyard. Surveys while taking a walk in a local park are also encouraged, as are incidental or single species sightings, breeding events and interactions between birds, such as Noisy Minors chasing another bird.

To take part:

Register for a Birdata account at the Birdlife website

Familiarise yourself with the instructions or watch the video at Birds in Backyards website

Log into Birdata on the app or website and submit your Birds in Backyards 20 minute survey

The results of the surveys will build on BirdLife Australia’s two decades of national monitoring and education.

The data is used by architects, urban planners, developers, local government, academics, educators and conservation organisations to improve urban biodiversity.
