Applications open for Pride Centre Reference Panel
Thursday 29 October 2020
Council is calling for applications for a Reference Panel that will provide advice and feedback in establishing an Inner West Pride Centre.
The panel will ensure that the needs and requirements of the LGBTIQ community are incorporated into the setting up of the Pride Centre operations.
The panel will also oversee the Expression of Interest process from LGBTIQ or LGBTIQ-friendly organisations to manage the Centre.
Newtown Town Hall has been identified a suitable location for the Centre, as a hub in the LGBTIQ friendly suburb of Newtown.
“The Inner West has been the home to a large and vibrant LGBTIQ community for many decades and we have been the beating heart and soul of the struggle for civil rights in this country. That’s why we’ve been so determined to bring this vision to life,” said Mayor Darcy Byrne.
Two additional members will be convened from Council’s existing LGBTIQ Working Group.
Applications can be made at yoursay.innerwest.nsw.gov.au/pride-centre and close on Friday 13 November.
Mayor Byrne said Council is committed to providing space and a voice to the community’s LGBTIQ community.
“This is a big step forward for the Inner West. As Mayor I am committed to making the Council progressive AND effective. This Pride Centre is a great example of that ethos,” he said.
Newtown Town Hall has been identified a suitable location for the Centre, as a hub in the LGBTIQ friendly suburb of Newtown.
Newtown Neighbourhood Centre (NNC) currently occupies Newtown Town Hall, but the town hall requires major refurbishment work.
NCC has asked Council for a new home so the renovations can take place.
NCC has agreed to move to its new permanent home at the Tom Foster Community Centre in south Newtown.
