Fire Up at EDGE Sydenham

Thursday, 18 July, 2019

Sydenham is set to go dark across two wintry weekends of art and performance as the EDGE festival comes to the Inner West’s industrial heartland.

EDGE Inner West supports new works by artists, creative spaces and businesses in iconic places and creative precincts across five local regions.

Following the success of EDGE GreenWay in Lilyfield in March, EDGE is moving south to Sydenham and inviting people from across Sydney to get an inside look at the city’s industrial art base.

“Get ready for two incredible weekends as EDGE Sydenham festival fires up the industrial heartland of our Inner West throughout day and night,” said Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne.

“The festival celebrates urban artists and cultural life, bringing together the industrial and creative arts industries of Sydenham showcasing where art is made, who is making it and why it matters.”

The first weekend features the popular Creative Trails, weaving around over 40 artist spaces plus guided tours, exhibitions, installations and street art, underground spaces, loads of live music and parties.

“Creative Trails is a fantastic opportunity to stick around and support our Inner West microbreweries- stop in for a craft beer at Willie the Boatman, Batch Brewing Company, Sauce Brewing Co or satisfy your hunger at one of the many eateries in the precinct,” said Mayor Byrne.

The second weekend will be a fire fuelled finale event when dancing flames will light the way as the Fire Garden by Tortuga Studios illuminates the night sky and an electronic wonderland of movement and art at ElectroSK8 at Sydenham Skate Park.

The free community event on Saturday, 10 August will honour the proud working past of Sydenham and St Peters with industrial artists inspired by metal and fire. This all ages event will also host live music, DJs, interactive art, food trucks and more.”

Mayor Byrne said the program also featured a mammoth opening night on Friday, 2 August with cutting EDGE art projects and exhibitions at Monster Mouse, Makerspace and Create or Die studios in Marrickville.

Locals can discover where art is made with Creative Trails on opening weekend, Saturday, 3 and Sunday, 4 August and can choose their own trail or select from guided tours by foot, bicycle or bus on the Mijuburi Creative Trail across Marrickville, Sydenham, Tempe and St Peters.
