EDGE Newtown launch

EDGE Newtown – themed Art and Activism – launches on Thursday, 7 November, 6pm-8pm in Newtown Square.
Everyone’s invited to this free community celebration of colour, movement, provocation, excitement and art.
Newtown Square will be transformed by:
•Enormous illuminated inflatable ‘water surge’ by artist Sarah Harvie
•A trail of giant paste-up illustrations celebrating the Reclaim the Streets activist movement
•Guerrilla art project bearing witness to The Sixth Mass Extinction
•Reimagined moon landing projection and performance
•LOVE TV and the Aphrodite Arts Activists inviting stories of passion and creativity
•Live music and performance by Jay Katz and Dweeb City (girl band from space)
Plus Melinda Vassallo’s new book, Perfect Match – Street Art of the Inner West will be available for the first time.
The launch of EDGE Newtown marks the beginning of two weekends of art trails, tours, celebrations and challenging talks, including:
•EDGE Creative Trails exploring hidden artists' studios, independent galleries and quirky artist run initiatives – by foot, bus or cycle. Tours also suitable for keen photographers and children are available. Book now at www.innerwest.nsw.gov.au/CreativeTrails
•Urban EDGE Contemporary Art Prize, Saturday, 9 November, Chrissie Cotter Gallery
•Dub Circle, Saturday 9 November, Camperdown Park rotunda. Spirits, critters and magical beings brought to life by local young people. Free face painting from 6pm. Followed by a ritual procession and then free movie in Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, The Princess Bride
•EDGE #IRL (In Real Life) Talks Tent, Newtown Festival, Sunday 10 November. Provocative talks and pop-up performances exploring art, activism, survival and sustainability in urban communities
•New Perfect Match street art. Artists include Fintan Magee, Brad Robson, Sharon Billinge, Phibs & Ox King, Nico and Rebecca Lourey
•St.Anmoré Festival of Music, Saturday 16 November, Stanmore village street streets, pubs and laneways come alive with mass choirs, local bands, solo musicians and singers
EDGE Newtown comes after the highly successful EDGE GreenWay, EDGE Sydenham and EDGE Ashfield. EDGE showcases cutting edge creatives and supports artists to not only survive but thrive.
