Youth Week sets up school holiday fun
Inner West Council’s 2018 Youth Week calendar of FREE activities commences next week in the time for the April school holidays.
Importantly, activities and events are organised with the input of young people aged 12-24 in communities across NSW.
Inner West Council is assisting in coordinating and supporting a dozen local events and activities this year from sporting comps to cultural events and workshops.
Across the Inner West, different youth populations and activities are catered for drawing on the expertise of local community agencies such as Marrickville Youth Resource Centre, PCYC Marrickville, Youthblock, Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, Addison Road Community Centre, Youth Off the Streets, Barnardos, Metro Assist, Launchpad and Totem Skateboarding.
Events include:
• ‘Battlelines’ is a youth event for 12-18 years at Marrickville Youth Resource Centre starting at 11am on Wednesday, 17 April with indoor and outdoor games including billiards, table tennis, giant novelty sumo suits, roaming police van and free BBQ
• A skate and scooter competition will be held at the new Sydenham Green Skatepark on Tuesday, 21 April from 12 noon to 4pm for skaters aged 12-18
• A creative writing workshop will be held from 10am-12noon on Friday, 20 April where youth aged 12-18 can unlock their imagination and learn techniques to improve their writing with acclaimed author Walter Mason
Planning and organising for this year’s celebrations has also involved young people who are members of Council’s Young Leaders Reference Group, students from various local high schools, students from TAFE Youth Work course at Ultimo, and members of youth reference group for Headspace Central Sydney.
Youth Week began as a NSW Government initiative in 1989, and has since grown to be a celebration of young people in every state and territory across the country.
Following the success of the NSW Youth Week program, Youth Week became a national event in 2000. National Youth Week is jointly supported by the Australian Government, State and Territory governments and local governments.
