WestConnex/Second Sydney Harbour Tunnel Public Meeting

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne is urging residents to attend a public meeting to hear what concerns Council and parents from Rozelle Public School have with the approval of the final stage of WestConnex and the proposed second Sydney Harbour Tunnel.

On 17 April, the State Government secretly approved Stage 3 of WestConnex, the M4/M5 Link. It was not until 10 days later that they finally announced it to the public.

“The planning of WestConnex has been marked by ineptitude and secrecy at every turn,” said Mayor Byrne.

“This approval will mean more unfiltered smoke stacks and the mother of all rat runs across the Inner West.

“This project has been a nightmare for the Inner West, but the worst is still to come,” he said.

When combined with the proposed second Sydney Harbour Tunnel, which would begin its harbour crossing underneath Balmain and Birchgrove, it adds up to years of construction impacts and traffic chaos for the Inner West.

But the State Government’s war on the Inner West doesn’t stop there. It has also proposed turning the Balmain Leagues Club site into a “dive site” – essentially an open mine to extract spoilage from the tunnelling.

With Rozelle Public School just 50 metres from the dive site, school students will be subjected to years of construction dust and noise, followed by unfiltered emissions from exhaust stacks.

“Residents deserve better treatment from a Government that seems hell-bent on destroying our homes and poisoning our local environment,” said Mayor Byrne.

“It’s important that local residents have an opportunity to find out exactly what is being proposed for our area, to hear what parents from Rozelle Public School, concerned community members and Council officers have to say about the two projects.

“I urge you to come along to the public meeting in Balmain Town Hall. We need your help to send the State Government a message that we’ve had enough,” said Mayor Byrne.
