Council urges residents to support Save Globe Wilkins family fun day campaign

Council has reaffirmed its support for Globe Wilkins Preschool, calling on the State Government to reconsider its decision to evict the facility from Wilkins Public School in Marrickville.
Globe Wilkins Preschool has been operating from dedicated classrooms within the grounds of Wilkins Public School for almost 20 years.
The Department of Education recently told Council that when the Preschool’s current license expires in December 2019, it will return the classrooms to Wilkins Public School use.
“I am very disappointed that the Department of Education is considering evicting this award-winning preschool,” said Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne.
“I have written to the Minister for Education stating our complete opposition to this and urging him to reconsider the decision.
“In a year when the State Government has flagged the importance of preschool education and committed new funding to ensure that preschool numbers increase, this is a decision which beggars belief,” he said.
The Globe Wilkins Preschool is one of only 20 preschools Australia-wide to currently hold a National Quality Framework “Excellent” rating, the highest award an Education and Care Service can receive.
If the preschool loses its premises, it will leave approximately 70 children without an exceptionally high level of care and preschool education.
Council has also thrown its support behind the Save Globe Wilkins family fun day.
“Please come along to the ‘Save Globe Wilkins Preschool Spring Picnic’ on Sunday 9 September, from 10am-2pm in Marrickville Park, to show your support for our kids and their education,” said Mayor Byrne.
