Mayor condemns WestConnex Stage 3’s secret approval Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne has strongly condemned the NSW Government for its secret approval of the final stage of WestConnex. Stage 3 of the project was approved without the public being informed on 17 April, and announced last Friday afternoon. “The planning of WestConnex has been marked by ineptitude and secrecy at every turn,” said Mayor Byrne. “Now, we find out that Stage 3 of WestConnex was approved by the State Government behind closed doors and kept secret from the public for 10 days. “Then they put out a press release, late on Friday, announcing this ridiculous, wasteful project has finally got the tick of approval,” he said. Confirmation of the motorway’s approval will be deeply concerning for residents in the Inner West. “WestConnex has been a nightmare for the Inner West, but the worst is still to come,” said Mayor Byrne. “This approval will mean more unfiltered smoke stacks and the mother of all rat runs across the Inner West. “Residents deserve better treatment from a Government that seems hell-bent on destroying homes and their livelihoods,” he said. The Council’s assessment of the State Government’s Environmental Impact Statement for the final stage of WestConnex maintained the project was fundamentally flawed. Independent engineering experts have also expressed serious doubts that Stage 3’s Rozelle Interchange can be constructed in the form proposed. “The Government’s failure to find a single conforming tenderer to build Rozelle Interchange reinforces this view. It’s just a ludicrous situation,” said Mayor Byrne. For further information, contact John Roper on 9392 5914
