Free farewell swim day at Ashfield Aquatic Centre

Ashfield Aquatic Centre is throwing open its doors and asking the community to help make a splash to bid farewell to the Aquatic Centre which is about to close and be rebuilt, Inner West Mayor, Darcy Byrne announced today. 

Mayor Byrne said the Ashfield Aquatic Centre which is in desperate need of an upgrade will close for building works on 16 April and reopen in early 2020. 

“Everyone is invited to come along to help make a splash and mark history with a final swim in the Ashfield pool before it is replaced with a brand new complex,” Mayor Byrne said. 

“There will be a free BBQ from 12:30-1:30pm and games sessions and inflatable fun events throughout the day. 

“Since it first opened on Australia Day in 1963 the much loved Aquatic Centre has had over 11.5 million visitors through its doors. 

“Now after 55 years, the ageing facility is finally set to get a much needed makeover. 

“The new first class Aquatic Centre will include a state-of-the-art mix of contemporary facilities and will be a fantastic community asset for generations to come. 

“The final community preferred plans include a new health and fitness centre, spa, steam and sauna facilities and a new world class ‘movable floor’ for the outdoor program pool so it can be used for everything from water polo to learn to swim and aqua aerobics lessons.” 

Mayor Byrne said the final plan for the redevelopment of the Ashfield Aquatic Centre includes: 
• A new 50m indoor pool with accessible ramp and pool divider 
• A new outdoor pool with floating floor that can change its depth, opening it up for a wide range of uses 
• A new children’s leisure pool with landscaping and green wall 
• An improved entrance with customer service area, change rooms, crèche and retail space 
• A new health and fitness centre 
• New community meeting room facilities 
• A community green space and covered seating 
• Landscaped areas and terraces for the external pools 
• Increased parking spaces.
