Balmain Leagues Club update

                                                            Thursday, 13 September 2018

“I welcome today’s agreement between Balmain Leagues Club and developer Heworth, which will provide an immediate cash injection to keep the Club afloat.

“Earlier today, I called a meeting of all the parties to discuss the Club’s dire financial state and to try to broker an agreement to keep the Club from going into voluntary administration.

“I am very pleased that Balmain Leagues Club and Heworth have found an interim solution that will see the Club remain viable.

“Council fought a long and successful battle against a previous owner of the site in the NSW Land and Environment Court to ensure the Tigers would have a home in any redevelopment.

“That court ruling means that there is an absolute requirement for a Tigers club to be located in the new development, if it is to be approved – a fact I have restated to Heworth today.

“Given the perilous financial position of Balmain Leagues Club I have today contacted Wests Ashfield, the shareholders of Wests Tigers, about their potential involvement in a Balmain Tigers or Wests Tigers leagues club to be established in the proposed development of the former Leagues Club site.

“I commend the Balmain Leagues Club’s board members, Heworth and Wests Ashfield for acting in good faith and I will be working closely and transparently with them in the coming days to secure the future of the Tigers.”
