Wall2Wall Celebrates Ten Years Council is celebrating the tenth birthday of the hugely successful Wall2Wall public art competition by commissioning a new mural opposite the White Bay Cruise Terminal. The Robert Street location will be the subject of a new work with the participation of a prominent Australian artist to be confirmed soon. An initiative of the former Leichhardt Council, Wall2Wall project has resulted in ten years of murals being implemented in the former Leichhardt local government area, reducing graffiti in high profile locations and replacing it with high quality works by highly skilled artists. Wall2Wall has also asked the artists participating to share more than their work with the community. It has invited them to connect with the site in meaningful ways by relating their work to the historical use of the site, or to its contemporary use, or even the flora or fauna of the area and to communicate something of that meaning to their local, and visiting, audiences. Local Artist Skulk, as a finalist in last year’s competition, was chosen to paint the Harold Hawkins Court wall on Norton Street after building owners the Uniting Church agreed to allow the wall to be used as a Wall2Wall site while the building was unoccupied. “The application process for Wall2Wall has highlighted the significance of local areas to me as an artist,” Skulk said. “Every commission I have had in the program has been a challenge, especially the Norton Street façade. I think it’s my best large scale mural to date.” The Wall2Wall Mural Competition in 2016 once has once again identified three big and bold sites, and is encouraging all interested artists to enter by the deadline of 5pm, Monday 17 October, 2016. Artist’s designs are being invited for the following sites: Site 1 - Wine Square at 63 - 65 Pyrmont Bridge Road, Camperdown; Site 2 - Peter J Fitzhenry (Autoworks) at 1-5 Chester Street, Camperdown; Site 3 - Old Bakery at 469 - 483 Balmain Road, Rozelle.
