Registrations open 10 August for 2016 Garage Sale Trail Registrations open Wednesday 10 August for the 2016 Garage Sale Trail, one of Australia’s biggest community events. This year the Trail is on Saturday 22 October. Inner West Council is an official supporter of the event - a day of simultaneous garage sales across the country hosted by households, schools, community groups and other organisations. Council is encouraging residents to declutter, reuse, meet their neighbours - and make some money at the same time. This year, the Garage Sale Trail is being rolled out to a wider area across the inner west of Sydney. The Trail is a natural fit for Inner West Council. Council’s waste strategies which encourage reducing consumption and reusing and recycling as much as possible, so as to achieve a more liveable, sustainable community. As well, the Trail has proved to be an effective community-builder, with Garage Sale Trail participants reporting that they met an average of 22 neighbours on the day – and stayed in touch with around half of them. Last year, the Garage Sale Trail recorded over 13,000 sales taking place on the one day, with 350,000 Australians getting involved across the country. Almost half of all sellers said that they wouldn’t have hosted a sale otherwise. Each household made an average of $323, while community groups made an average of $735. Seventy-five per cent of participants also say they now think differently about waste.
