Have Your Say on Cooks River Parklands
The Inner West Council community is invited to comment on plans to improve recreation and environmental outcomes for the Cooks River and its parklands.
The areas identified to be part of the Cooks River Parklands, described as a connected series of open spaces that form the northern corridor of the lower Cooks River, are:
- HJ Mahoney Reserve
- Steel Park
- Richardson’s Lookout
- Warren Park
- Cooks River Foreshore
- Mackey Park
- Kendrick Park
- Fatima Island
Inner West Council has prepared a Plan of Management which will guide the parkland’s use and future improvements over the next 10 years.
The $10 million draft Plan includes water sensitive urban design initiatives, new youth facilities and childrens playgrounds, improved picnic and barbecue facilities, staged exercise circuits, and plantings and shade structures.
The Administrator of Inner West Council Mr Richard Pearson described the plans for the open areas along the Cooks River as “exciting”.
“There will be better access, more recreational opportunities, more beautiful parks with more trees and shade, rain gardens…
“As well, the plans include environmental improvements, to both the river banks and the water quality,” Mr Pearson said.
“We want the Cooks River Parklands to be a place where residents go for family picnics, but also both exercise and quiet contemplation. We asked what the community wanted, and now we are delivering and improving on what they said are the qualities they cherish most about these areas.”
Inner West residents, community members, and stakeholders are urged to visit Council’s Your Say web page.
Once there, they can read the Cooks River Parklands Plan of Management and Master Plan, the Council business paper, and the previous community engagement consultation, The Cooks River Parklands – creating the 10 year plan.
