Dawn Fraser Pool Receiving Major Upgrade An $800,000 upgrade to local favourite Dawn Fraser Pool will deliver improvements to accessibility and restoration of the 1880s State Heritage listed pool buildings. Administrator Richard Pearson said that claims by former Councillor Darcy Byrne that Council had indefinitely postponed the project were scare mongering and blatantly untrue. “At the October Council Meeting, which Mr Byrne attended, the funding for this project was approved in its entirety,” he said. “We are sticking to exactly the same timeline as the former Leichhardt Council would have used. “The rollout of the $800,000 in funds must be consulted with the community and approved as part of the budget process. “We will do that next year while we develop the design and seek heritage approvals. “We don’t want to shut the pool to do the work over the 2017-2018 summer swimming season, so the upgrade will begin in the winter of 2018. The previous Leichhardt Council had discussed the funding, but hadn’t formally allocated it. “We are extremely glad that this funding is now formally available for the upgrade of this much loved community facility,” said Mr Pearson. Upgrades to the heritage facility will also include new toilets and improvements to fire safety, and an additional $85,000 upgrade for the pontoon. The former Leichhardt Council identified a plan of major upgrade works for Dawn Fraser Pool, which formed the basis of the $800,000 allocated from the Section 94 Open Space Developer Contributions plan. This plan was adopted at the October 2016 Inner West Council Meeting through an amendment to the works schedule of Council’s Section 94 Plan.
