Access Award Winner Celebrates Inclusion Rozelle fruit and vegetable business Darling Fresh has won the 2016 Inner West Council Community Access Award 2016 for its support of improving accessibility for the whole community. The award was announced at the Inner West Local Business Awards Presentation Evening at Burwood RSL Club on Wednesday 29 June, 2016 commending the more than decade old business for its efforts to make their own retail space more accessible. Following acceptance of the Access Award, Darling Fresh owner Emile Amine said improving accessibility to the community has always been a priority for the Darling Street store. “We believe that encouraging people from all walks to get involved in this wonderful community can only make it more vibrant and welcoming," Emile said. ‘Darling Fresh’ (soon to be renamed as ‘The Nature Spot’) also received its nomination in part as a welcoming business who participated in the Red Door Arts ‘Connect’ performance. This performance project (also documented in a short film) was an immersive theatre experience that guided participating residents and local business people through the streets of Rozelle in an effort to explore the community through the eyes of people with disabilities. The ‘Connect’ project aimed to encourage participants to better ask what steps could be taken to improve access and inclusion to streetscapes and businesses for those with a disability and with mobility issues. The Community Access Award is an initiative of the former Leichhardt Council as part of the Inner West Local Business Awards It seeks to recognise the efforts of those organisations and businesses in the Local Government Area that have made their business inclusive of the whole community. The Community Access Award acknowledges initiatives from a business that enable a person with limited mobility and/or a disability to access local services in a dignified manner.
