Entries open for the 2024 Built Environment Awards
Submissions are now open for the 2024 Built Environment Awards. The awards include two broad categories, the Marrickville Medal for Conservation and the Inner West Urban Photography Competition.
The Marrickville Medal for Conservation has been running for 29 years. Awarded annually since 1995 it was one of the first of its kind in NSW.
It celebrates built conservation works that contribute to the understanding and preservation of the Inner West’s rich cultural and architectural heritage. The award is held in conjunction with the NSW National Trust Heritage Festival.
The Marrickville Medal is open to all building works completed in the past three years with positive conservation outcomes, including:
- Preservation
- Restoration
- Reconstruction
- Adaptation
- Interpretation
The iconic home known as ‘The Balmain House’, restored by Sydney architecture studio, SAHA, took out the 2023 Marrickville Medal. This innovative heritage restoration capitalised on natural light and heating, avoiding reliance on mechanical systems.
The Inner West Urban Photography Competition is open to people of all ages and abilities and encourages people to engage with the Inner West Council urban landscape. Images must in some way feature, reference or comment on heritage attributes of our built environment within the Inner West Council local government area.
Winner of the general category in the 2023 Urban Photography Awards went to Matthew Venables for ‘On Livingstone Road’. The winner of the Primary School category was Andre Antunes for ‘Trinity’, while the High School category award went to Winston Parry for ‘The Egyptian Room.’
The Built Environment Awards will be announced in October. For more information and to enter the Awards, go to innerwest.nsw.gov.au/Built
