Uncanny at Chrissie Cotter Gallery

An exhibition that raises important questions about gender is the next to feature at Inner West Council’s Chrissie Cotter Gallery.

Kirsten Drewes and Elizabeth Rankin say their artworks are “uncanny because they present a strange world in which female voices are represented, a surreal world of possibilities embodied in three dimensional soft sculptural forms and painterly collages”.

“Uncanny explores our expectations of gender through sculpture and painting,” said Elizabeth.

The collaboration between Drewes and Rankin will create a surreal landscape within the gallery space.

Visitors can expect “a world of the unexpected through ambiguous, humorous sculptural forms and strange painted and collaged imagery. The works will fully activate wall, floor and aerial spaces,” she said.

Both Kirsten and Elizabeth have completed PhDs (Drewes at UNSW, Rankin at the National Art School).

This exhibition is an opportunity for them to work together to explore their ideas in a way not possible during COVID lockdowns.

They have exhibited separately in the past but also in collaboration, a process they both enjoy.
