New Art at Newtown’s ArtSeat by Geoff Harvey

The latest ArtSeat is a series of collages made from salvaged Lino floor coverings.

The work, ‘You Floored Me (with your beauty & your song)’, by Geoff Harvey, “reflect a period in history that is long gone now,” he said.

The ArtSeat is “a historical visual document of the way ordinary working people decorated their homes,” Geoff said.

“In the 1950s, there was a pride in the ‘Modern’ approach to interior design, and wild vibrant colours were all the rage.

“I was inspired by the fantastic colours and patterns, and a desire to use recycled repurposed materials in art,” Geoff said.

“I love and play music and I wanted to incorporate a musical theme in these collages because the lively Lino patterns were suggestive of music to me,” Geoff added.

“And I imagine they were designed for people who love dancing in the kitchen,” he said.

Council’s ArtSeat is a permanent structure in Newtown Square that provides local, emerging and established artists with a space where experimental and non-commercial art can be showcased.

Incorporating public seating and lighting, the ArtSeat is also a landmark meeting point.

“The Newtown ArtSeat is a fantastic opportunity for artists to make public work that they would like to be seen by a large cross section of the general public,” Geoff said.

“It’s fun and adds so much to the street life of the already vibrant precinct.”
