Ferry services between Balmain peninsula and Circular Quay must remain

Friday, 17 January 2020

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne has condemned the NSW Government’s proposed cut of direct ferry services from Birchgrove and Thames Street wharves to Circular Quay.

“Both these services are heavily used by our community. The cuts would leave users of Birchgrove and Thames Street wharves stranded each morning and night.

“The Government plans also include transferring all Parramatta River passengers at Balmain East to other ferry services to Circular Quay.

“This will pump thousands more commuters through Balmain East, inevitably increasing pressure on passenger numbers.

Mayor Byrne is also concerned about the environmental impact the service changes will have.

“People I have spoken to say that, instead of catch ferries, thousands of locals will almost certainly find it necessary to drive into the city instead.”
