Opening of new Waterfront Drive Sporting Grounds
Wednesday, 3 April 2019
Inner West Council will formally unveil the Waterfront Drive Sporting Grounds upgrade at Callan Park on Saturday, 13 April, 10am. The community is invited to attend.
The long-awaited upgrade will create a state-of-the-art sporting facility for local sports clubs.
The works include sports field lighting, irrigation, sub-surface drainage, regrading, new turf, cricket wicket and cricket net and new fencing.
Council allocated $2,475,000 to the project, while the cricket nets received $43,074 from the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said he campaigned strongly for the upgrade with the support of local parents and club players.
“This upgrade will be a massive boost for local clubs crying out for better training and playing space especially given the ever increasing demand for recreation space in the Inner West,” he said.
“Resurfacing of Waterfront Drive’s two playing fields will drastically improve the ground quality, and new irrigation and drainage will also help make sure that fields remain open more days each year.
“We are celebrating the opening of this project by inviting the local community and sportspeople, putting on a BBQ, jumping castle and face painting,” he said.
Balmain & District Football Club canteen will also be operating. Council is also providing drinks and fruit.
Plus, there will be soccer and Rugby League clinics.
“The Waterfront Drive Sporting Grounds upgrade is part of Council’s $65 million investment in parks, sports grounds and aquatic facilities over three years, representing the largest and most comprehensive funding commitment to support community sport and recreation in the history of our community,” Mayor Byrne said.
“We are working to create a healthier community and aim to deliver first class sport and recreation facilities for everyone in the Inner West,” he said.
