Translating and interpreting (TIS)
TIS National is an interpreting service provided by the Department of Home Affairs for people who need support to communicate in English, and for agencies and businesses that need to communicate with their non-English speaking clients.
TIS provides:
- immediate phone interpreting
- pre-booked phone interpreting
- on-site interpreting
It provides immediate telephone interpreting services, as well as pre-booked telephone and on-site interpreting.
If you wish to speak to a Council officer about a matter related to the Council's core business, please come to one of Inner West Council's service centres and let the customer service know who you want to speak to and which language you speak, and they will arrange a conversation TIS.
You can also use the service off-site. You just need to
- Call TIS National on 131 450
- An automated prompt will ask you which language you need. Please state the language that you require.
- When you are connected to a TIS National operator, say the language you need again.
- Stay on the line while the operator finds an available interpreter for you.
The operator will connect you with an interpreter in the language you asked for. You will be asked to provide:
- your name
- the name of the organisation you need to contact
- the phone number of the organisation you need to contact
- stay on the line while the operator connects you and the interpreter through to the organisation.
This is a FREE service.
