Esther GalleryEsther Abrahams (c1769-1846) was an apprentice milliner from London sentenced to seven years transportation on the First Fleet, for the theft of some black lace valued at 50 shillings, although the evidence against her was circumstantial. Her luck changed when she caught the eye of the First Lieutenant George Johnston on the way to Sydney. They married some years after she had had seven children by Johnston. Her husband, Lieutenant-Colonel George Johnston, received extensive land grants, and he and Esther lived on their property named Annandale until it was sold and sub-divided for residential development in the 1870s.
